Katie's identical twin sister means the world to her. After all, they were always there for each other, even after their father was drafted into and died fighting in World War III, and their mother was killed in an attack on their town. Now legal adults, the girls live together and care for one another. The war, however, greatly depleted humankind. Every couple of years, a group of fifty Americans are involuntarily chosen to sail across the sea and attempt to find another government for the U.S. to team up with.

Nobody from any of the previous teams have returned or figured out a way to contact America.

So when Aubrey is drafted for this mission, Katie knows what she has to do to save her sister.
