In the Light Joshua Dun has everything he could every ask for, perfect parents, perfect friends, a perfect face, perfect clothes, perfect body. Everything was perfect in Josh's world and everyone  was happy.
In the Dark Tyler Joseph's life was actually a living hell, his parents hated him, he didn't have any friends, he was told to kill himself daily, he couldn't tell that he was beautiful, he didn't think he was perfect, he hated himself, he's suicidal. Then again that was normal in the Dark. Nothing was even close to perfect and no one was happy.

The Dark and the Light are not allowed to meet or cross the border. 
But one day Tyler is pushed into the Light and stumbles across Josh.
