They did have a good relationship before. For a few years, they both were happy and a loving couple. Eventually Mark proposed to Jack, they got married and lived a happy life.

A year later after their wedding, Mark started having anger issues. Even though he was a sweet person he started getting mood swings where he'd be unstably angry. He started hitting Jack. Jack just thought this would pass but it didn't. He didn't want the same thing to happen to Chica so he sent her off to Mark's mom.
