Even though she's lived in the neighbourhood since she was two, eighteen year old Emily has almost never spent more than fifteen minutes at the pool by choice. She's babysat the majority of the kids since she was fourteen and spent hours with a book at the very back of the area waiting for them to finish their activities, she knows most of the parents by name and has spent good time talking politics and gossip with the different mom-cliques (Ms. Fowler just kicked out her thirty year old eldest son from the basement!), but Emily hasn't really done any summer things more suitable for her own age. Apparently this is the year she does. Because her best friend Hannah is going to spend almost all of their last summer before college in Australia, she took it upon herself to get Emily a job at the pool to force her to live this summer - by being some kind of assistant to the undeniably attractive lifeguards. Among them is James Dobrick, Head Lifeguard And Supervisor (yes, with the capitals), who has taken it upon himself to "get Emily into shape" and make her summer worth it (albeit a little begrudgingly; it's a favour for Hannah), starting with disgustingly early morning runs. Between pool parties, forced swimming lessons, and trips with the swim team (where she falls into the deep end in the middle of a frown crawl race...), Emily might just get to experience one of the best things summer can offer: Love.
