In the world we used to know, the virus has finally become everything but a fantasy. Countries decimated. Continents brought to their knees. Civilization and order scattered to the polluted wind.
Welcome to what is left of the charred, broken Earth.
After the acidity levels of the dying oceans became too high, most forms of life went extinct. People fought over scraps of resources, trade came to a halt. But from the toxic waters came a newly evolved monster, a parasite that learned to survive and yearned for a host...
Minute insects that hatched in open sea, found their way to land, swarmed and borrowed into humans, growing at an alarming rate before overtaking the body, shredding nerves and muscle along the way.
They acted as a group, somehow coordinating themselves to manipulate the host's body. Disguising themselves as humans, getting closer to other humans.
Only, they weren't exceptional at mimicking human behavior.
They could be recognized very easily, yet the largest infected area, a large portion of the Northeast United States and Eastern Canada was growing at an alarming rate, and something had to be done. Desperate, leaders sealed the massive area with a concrete wall 200 feet in height and 40 feet in width. Everyone who wasn't fast enough... was trapped with the parasites.
Now meet Verenna.
She's never known a life outside Quarantine Z. But she's planning to escape, and with little combat skill, no companions to start with her, and personal tragedy haunting her nights, as well as a mysterious countdown that follows her footsteps through whatever path she takes, Verenna is afraid.
But fear is what keeps her strong. Alive.
