A week after one of Detective Mandy Santos's police officers allegedly shot and killed a black man for "simply being black," Christine Roberts, Mandy's girlfriend's adopted sister, argues with Mandy Santos about whether the officer's actions were an act of brutality or completely justifiable. Due to the darkness, Christine was the only person able to see everything clearly. Chris and Ash must confront Mandy about the situation. Mandy knows what she has to do about the officer who committed such horrid acts, but the courage it takes to correctly handle the situation is difficult to acquire, especially with most of the country watching her every move.

What's this book about? When I first committed to writing a novel, I planned on doing one of my fantasy projects. But the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson and the resulting explosion of racial tensions dominated the news. What I saw online frustrated me. I knew that there was more to the story than any one side would likely present. Such complex issues aren't answered by sound bites and 140-character policy statements. I read up on aspects of culture I had no exposure to. I sought perspectives that wouldn't appear on my Facebook feed or regular web browsing. And I devoured some great books by Malcolm Gladwell that address human nature from an analytical angle using racial tensions and the civil rights movement as primary examples. I was amazed, moved, challenged, and inspired. And I knew that though I arguably have no right to say anything on the subject of racial tensions, I had to write this book.Complete

Dan is hungry, cold and fascinated with the girl that broke into his apartment on a Thursday night. Maybe it doesn't correlate but he becomes a criminal. --------------------------------------------------- His mouth hung open, none of his high school classes had included a 'How to Confront a Possible Intruder Lurking in Your Shadows' course. He let the world fall to the forefront of his consciousness in those seconds; the fading sirens included. The cheese dust on his tongue sat sour, he could not be sure that this intruder was not related to their loud blaring earlier in the night. He swallowed the uncertainty. The voice had a noticeable soprano lilt to it, still, she sounded rough. Regardless, Dan frowned at her tone. That and the flutter of his heart as it recognized her voice. Dan's little sister had a habit of critiquing him, not always in a constructive way either. One thing she usually mentioned that she envied was his ability to recall details well; in her words, he 'majored on the minor but it only benefitted him'. He had never disputed her but he was not sure if having perfect recollection of the voice of a girl who threatened to drown him two years ago when he had inconvenienced her - he was not sure if that would benefit him.
