In Terra Infernum, once every few generations oldest female in the family, between the ages of 11 and 14, gets sent to the Academy of Future Ladies. At the Academy, they are taught how to be perfect women for the Lords and Dukes in the realm.

Amberlyn Ignis has been chosen to go to the Academy and has spent all her time there since being taken away from her mother at the age of 12. She is a few days away from her Auction, where she and the 47 other 16-year-olds that have been taken away from their families will be sold to the Lords and Dukes when a surprising event happens, which hurts her friends.  While a hurt Cayla goes to the Auction with Amberlyn, Mira will be stuck in the Academy's walls for another few years. 

Amberlyn goes to Auction, all the while trying to fight her way back to free Mira, who Amberlyn has been forced to leave behind. But while Amberlyn tries to free herself, Mira and Cayla for their roles as Ladies, she finds herself falling in love with the man who had bought her. A man who she swore she would never love.
