Mathew doesn't speak. He can, but he just doesn't. He never really participates in anything social. And if he does, he does it with David. David understands that he doesn't speak, but he doesn't really care for the boy. He normally just translates the motions he does, like pointing to a certain problem on the page and writing a question mark. Unless it's a social activity, he doesn't pay attention to him. Until that day.

Clay had been closeted all his life and planned for it to remain that way. But, with having homophobic parents it was seemingly impossible to ever find the happiness he longed for. After being outed to the only people he now disliked the most, his parents react worse than expected and Clay falls into a pit of loneliness when he gets sent to conversion therapy to "turn him straight again". George had homophobic parents too and goes through the same. When times are at its worst somehow these two meet each other and now they are isolated from reality in the therapy school.
