Mathew doesn't speak. He can, but he just doesn't. He never really participates in anything social. And if he does, he does it with David. David understands that he doesn't speak, but he doesn't really care for the boy. He normally just translates the motions he does, like pointing to a certain problem on the page and writing a question mark. Unless it's a social activity, he doesn't pay attention to him.
