Daniel wants to have a normal life but can't escape the fact that he's over 2,000 years old with unknown abilities. He spends days wishing he could settle down with someone and die happy. So when Rachel falls into his life he can't help but fall in love with her when he knows he'll just be burying her next just as it always is. He can't keep doing this to himself because even though he can't die in the end its going to kill him.
