What does it mean to be human?

Sam Quincy, 22, is a rookie detective and ex marine in the United States third largest city, Detroit Michigan. 16 years ago Detroit was one of many cities and regions across the world that went through major rebirths after a sudden breakthrough in technology. Robotics and AI are a now part of everyday life. However, after the war, Sam grew to despise robots and all AI. The world isn't without it flaws though. Crime levels have exploded everywhere.

Sam is selected to be a part of the special program code named Overlord. It assigns special agents with AI partners to assist in solving crimes. Artificial Detective Intelligence Units(ADIEU) are able to solve crimes with 98% accuracy. The missing 2% though requires a human touch to solve. No one is able to explain why or how they can miss certain key evidence but they can.

However, when Sam and his ADIEU partner Specter are unable to solve a series of murders, they must dig deep into the city's underbelly to find the truth. What they discover could plunge the world into it a new war or push humanity further than it has ever gone before. But in the end, is humanity exclusive to people?

Back cover In the late twenty-second century Humans have reached the stars, and they are not the first. Ancient technology has literally propelled them into the galaxy, and they find themselves far from alone. Three civilisations, more advanced by millennia, rule vast areas of space by cooperating with each other as the all-powerful Citadel. There are many other, less powerful species; Humanity is forced to join their ranks, low in the pecking order. As they explore and colonise new worlds, the Systems Alliance of Humans encounter the Batarians. Skirmishes ensue, avoiding an all-out war that might draw the attention of the Citadel. On a frontier colony, tragedy strikes time and again. Growing up knowing little else, eager to avenge a mother's death at the hands of Batarians, a youngster's journey begins to "be all they can be". But that may be something other than Human - and the shadow that falls across all of the Systems Alliance may be from within as well as without. This is the story of Sam Tarot, becoming an agent of the Systems Alliance Special Operations - on a mission to defend Humanity against all enemies. --*-- Want to know more? Three Degrees Of Danger (2019) by -tropicalminds
13 parts Complete Mature
[ 2019 ONC ambassador's pick and ONC shortlister ] The three degrees of Danger are as follows: Denial. You pretend that it's not there and you lie to yourself that it'll pass. It won't. The second stage is evolution. You tell yourself that the worst is over but you're gradually changing inside, slowly adapting to the new environment. The final degree of Danger is succumbing to temptation. You give up listening to your fading instincts, give in to the voices in your head and you give it your all. Because the world is changing and if you don't change with it, you're dead by daylight. *** Danger is a virus that is spreading through everybody's Software. It turns you insane, kills your moral compass. No one knows where it came from or how to stop it but one thing is clear- nothing will ever be the same. In a world where it's kill or be killed, you can't just stay on your toes and pray that you will survive. Murder is crucial if you want to live. These are the rules that Vic lives by as she races up the social ladder, ready to clinch the only thing that will vindicate her- the position of an Elite Killer, a title only given to the best serial killers. It is only when she meets a mysterious boy who refuses to play by the rules of society even when it means inevident death, does she start to challenge the system. In a world where mercy does not exist, Vic has to stop the deadly massacres without getting assasinated before the basic laws of a functioning civilisation starts to break down. Or is it already too late? #1 IN MURDER DRONES THREE DAYS AFTER POSTING IT????????? HELLO?????????????????????? When you awoke, it was not peaceful. It was not simple, as you'd been told. It was not to another face, catching you up to speed. It was with the sound of shattering glass and the sound of your sputtering gasps as you came into consciousness before you were decidedly ready to be awake. It was with the first thing you saw was yellows and flashing greens, purple hair of a body on the ground in front of the broken pod. It was to the feeling of cold air that was hard to breathe despite what you were told about acclimating. It was with gasps and scrambling barefoot out of the glass chamber, ducking yourself out under the thick piece of solid black metal, avoiding stepping on pieces of shattered glass. You awoke not to peace, but to danger. ---- Simply put: A Human (you) stumbles out of a cryogenic pod after 17 years in cryo, and now it is everyone 's problem (exaggeration) Originally posted to Ao3, now posted here
