The world is a dark and twisted fairytale full of dangers, and no one is safe.
Aylin is not what she seems, and might be considered a dangerous monster herself. She's only part human, but that side of her has a driving need to protect and understand them. Humans are fragile and often idiotic, yet their numbers continue to grow wildly - almost as fast as Khenarthi, the insectoid people who only recently became a problem. At night they've begun to steal away children, never to be seen again. They are just another addition to the many factions at war; quarreling between species, kingdoms, the use of magic, the furious ancients, and of course monsters.
Trying to keep her dangerous secret hidden while protecting others, Aylin acts as a monster slayer - a force to keep the balance in a kingdom tilting towards chaos. But not all people are good, and not all monsters are evil. When the world is shades of gray, nothing is as black or white as it seems.

"Shift." His voice hit me like a serrated blade as he stepped out of the crude semicircle of hardened wolves that had formed around me. I pushed myself off of the cold floor for what felt like the thousandth time that day, wiping the small trail of blood coming off of my lip and down my chin. "I won't ask you again."
