Clotilde de la Motte is not reaping in the new riches of Belle Epoque France. Rather, in all the splendour, her brother has wasted their entire fortune at Paris' famous brothels and gentleman's clubs. Foolishly, he gambles her away to the ruthless, mysterious and powerful Nicollier family, owners of the largest private bank in France.
