Mercy Hemlock thought finding her brother meant finding the answers; the answers to why he ran away, the answers to why he left her with them. She thought finding him would mean finding the last piece of her family, the last piece of herself that she could cherish and protect. She thought finding him meant she could make up for all the years she felt like she was ripping at the seams. Mercy Hemlock was no superhuman; she was no heroine in a fairytale. All she knew was her brother was as good as dead when he ran away from their temporary home a few days before they were to be given to their adoptive parent’s custody. That is, before she started receiving letters from her “dead” brother.
