The quest is to find a powerful gem in the Deep Forest, and then to use what powers it bestowed on them to delve into the Mountain Barrier. There, they will have to find the Light to dispel the growing Darkness within. Though this qest is honorable and righteous, the dangers that await them are exponentially worse than they could ever imagine. Whether they can save the world depends on whether they can survive themselves. Mature rating for blood, gore and depictions of violence. TW: mentions of drunkards and beer, mention of physical abuses, a description of trypophobia, claustrophobia, and other phobias, and descriptions of nasty cryptids. There is no depictions or allusions of sex, no f-bombs, or drug abuse. This story was started when I was in seventh grade. I finished the original when I was a senior in high school. Displeased with the finished product, I began to rewrite it here, starting June 2015, then again in 2020. I am quite satisfied with the result, and am sure this will be the final edition. This isn't the first book of the series, but there's no spoilers for 'The World is Larger than it Seems', so you can start on this one. Without warning it began! The inevitable, I think it's fair to assume this book is not in my possession. This means I'm most likely dead. Most nights I wrestle the reason I have chosen to explain what happened, the things we did to each other, things no human being should witness. I Wright this simply to enlighten your poor soul and give you more of a chance than I had. A chance to survive what is most likely the brink of human extinction. Times are harder now and as the days go by we are less of our former selves. We have become husks floating around in a lost, desolate world. I look at this place and it still seems so alien to me, as the days roll into the nights I'm still unsure of how we got to this point. If you are reading this, you too are probably North and very much aware of what has happened to our beloved city. I feel a responsibility to inform you that you will most likely share the same fate as I have. I understand you may be wondering what's worse than death, trust me in this place death seems like a paradise compared. I do not know why I still feel so obligated to write this. To be honest most nights I think its just an escape from the madness, like a natural sedative it's the only way I can fall asleep in this hell. However I do need to clear my conscious and pay dividend for my demons. I need you to know what happened to me; I need you to know what we have become and what we are capable of. The following story is the result of a game I played with a fellow writer, a fan of Fantasy and Manga. Basically, I offered to email him the beginning of a story. He would write the next part and send it back to me. I would write the next part, send it, and so on. But he didn't have enough time to take part in this little game. I then suggested that we write a story in the form of a serial and send the parts to each other by e-mail, once a week, for two months. My plan was to turn it into a summer mini-series. Caught up in the story, this attempt lasted through autumn, and winter, and was finished in spring. So, my first thanks go to you, Jeremy. I'd also like to thank the most diligent critic of my writing: Renault. Your corrections and comments were very relevant and were a great help. I hope that I will, at long last, be able to buy you a drink and discuss it with you face to face. As we haven't seen each other for more than five years, we probably won't even recognise one another anymore. Through my writing I have had the privilege of meeting a lot of different people, from all walks of life, but mostly waiters and waitresses in the (far too) numerous Brussels cafés, Exki, Pain Quotidien, and others, where I write, as well as the hotel staff in the Novotel, where I was living.
