As a young girl, Paradise was bullied for her name and the way she looked. But that never stopped her from catching a wave or two. Maybe once in a while she would do a few laps in the pool. After she learned how to swim, she loved it. She was born for the water.
Once she turned 18, she decided to get a job. A life guard job down by the beach. That's when she meets Connor O'Malley, a boy whos afraid of the ocean, in fact, afraid of swimming.
He was an outcast just like her, his mother is a drunk who is always missing out on her son's improvement, not only in school but his life. His dad also jumps from job to job, so he is missing out too.
After noticing that Connor was standing alone, not in swimming trunks but street clothes instead. It was odd to her. Everyone who comes to the beach doesn't dress like that. Its later when she finds out his secret.
