Avia Mellark, at the age of sixteen, has heard of the stories of the fight to the death and the situations of desperation and struggle for loved ones through her father Peeta, who claims that he and her mother, Katniss, has gone through. Almost like a punishment from the corrupt government of what was known as the Capitol ruled by a man under the name of Snow, the Hunger Games ruled on for 75 years until her mother led the rebels to take revenge and overthrow the Capitol. These things were like far away nightmares and stories that someone would only tell to scare children. Avia had never understood the pressure and fear her mother and father had felt during those Dark Days, not until the one day that her mother disappears mysteriously and a new president was elected who strangely resembled the evil that she has been taught to about ever since the age of five.
