Meet Joshalyn Campbell Pierce, ordinary teenager of the Ember Region. She is a fighter by blood, born to protect the people she was raised alongside. But when the palace interviewers come to town, she knows her entire life is about to change. Her eighteenth birthday was two weeks ago, and she is now old enough to be crowned.
When the King and Queen of Royal America pass and the Prince and Princess step up to take their place, a new couple must be chosen. But it is not easy to decide. The Competitors will have to fight for their spot in the throne room, but even if they are the most ruthless killers in the Competition, it all comes down to America's votes once we see the final two girls and the final two guys.
Josh finally has a chance to change her life, make it better... but she isn't so sure she's prepared for this. Is she ready to spill blood for a false golden crown? Also, it doesn't quite help that she has illegally fallen in love with a male competitor...
