The Hunger Games and love aren't two things you'd usually put next to eachother in a sentence, right?
Well, that's what I thought, until I was reaped for the 100th Hunger Games and was stuck in an arena with someone who I couldn't help but fall for.
You see, getting reaped was never something I considered, quite honestly. I'd never thought about what I'd do in an arena with twenty-three individuals, who were mostly bigger and stronger than me, having to fight to the death.
In all the years that I'd watched the Hunger Games, it had never dawned on me that it could be me in there, battling for my life. It could be me trying to survive another day, a day that meant I could see my family again.
Who I was didn't make it easy to avoid the Games, though.
My mother is Katniss Everdeen. My father is Peeta Mellark. And, unfortunately, I turned seventeen on the Fourth Quarter-Quell. The Quarter-Quell where the only tributes are those of the Victor's children.
How the heck am I going to get through this when I have to kill the guy I love?

My name is Iris, Iris Primrose Mellark. Not too long ago I found out about a thing called the Hunger Games, I was shocked to find out that my parents were a part of it but I can't blame them, my parents are awesome! My siblings don't really care about it, they find it cool that their mum and dad are famous but they mainly care about the fact they don't have to go in it. I on the other hand am nothing but curious, there is something more to it, something big that I haven't learnt yet, I mean there is only supposed to be one winner but both my parents came out of that arena, something had to happen and I'm going to find out, no matter the cost. We know her story. But have you ever wondered what it was like on the home front, in District 12? This story is Gale's, his outlook on the games, his feelings about his best friend's situation, and his interactions with the people of District 12. The story is set during the time period of "The Hunger Games" (book one of the trilogy). It is written from the perspective of Gale Hawthorne, and does not concern any events in books two and three. This is my first fan fiction, my first "real" attempt at long form prose writing, and my first Wattpad story. I appreciate constructive feedback, but please, no hate. While the characters and some plot points are based off of Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games Trilogy, (which I in no way own the rights to) I have created this story using my own imagination. AUTHOR'S NOTE: pretty much all of this story is from Gale's perspective. and it doesn't have a Gale x Katniss relationship, just friendship. I think that the end of Gale's story was unfulfilling. When I was eleven. My whole world changed. Katniss' dad died in a mining accident. You think it wouldn't affect me but I loved him just as much as Katniss did. Maybe even more than I loved my own father. I felt bad, that my own dad couldn't compare to Katniss'. He loved me too though. Loved me like his own. The day he died was the first in a long line of times I have ever seen Katniss cry. She never cried before then but she cried a lot after. Katniss' mother was suppose to get a job after his passing, she didn't. They were starving, dying. I decided to help. After school I would drag Katniss into the woods by her feet. We'd never gone in there without her father. It seemed like a scarier place without him. After some time it wasn't so scary. I don't know what made me volunteer for Katniss.
