Tris gets to the button to erase everyone's memory outside her little group of people right at the beginning. She lives and is saved by Tobias. But not everything is safe. With nobody remembering anybody still living in Chicago, plans to blow up the "vacant city" might put Tris in a terrible situation. Somebody within the group is trying to sabotage everyone, and no one knows who it is. Is there still anyone else out there? Let's find out.

Tobias remains in Dauntless, but while he isn't exactly despondent, he does feel out of place. He doesn't fit in and cannot go on with normal life after everything that happened. Then, Choosing Day arrives. And history definitely does not repeat itself when Tris goes through the initiation process with her old friends and enemies, her ex-boyfriend, and the new sixteen-year-olds, while citizens of Chicago are mysteriously dying.
