"Let's jump... Together," he told her, taking her hand in his. His steady breath soothed her. She looked up and met his gaze, before she nodded and repeated his words, "Together." Megan was too young to be facing the reality of her life. She was slowly, painfully dying inside. She had faced the truth, she wasn't going to win the battle. Her hope was long gone. She had given up. For good this time. She was embracing the darkness of her life, and she felt soothed with it. The pain was still there, but she could barely feel it. Preston, the boy she had a major crush on. The boy that helped her more than he realized. When he one day found her bucket list in one of her many old journals, he decided that he wanted to make her dreams come true. Before the day the darkness embraced her for good, before she slipped out of his fingers and were forever gone. "I just want to live!"

Sword still in her hands, she stomped her foot again. "Why are you smiling?" Brainwashed? Check. Sheltered? Check. Lost and alone? Check and, uh, check. That about summed Megan up. Banished from the heavens-kicked out-same thing-everyone thought for sure that this was it for her. Of course, no one had taken the demon King into account. He shrugged. "Because I'm happy." "Why?" She asked. "Because I find you endearing." "Why?" Desperate? Damn straight. Loved up? Beyond recognition. Prepared to rip anybody and everybody's throat out at any given moment for looking at her wrong? Absolutely. Claudio had waited far too long for his mate. Nothing was getting in the way of their forever. Not life. Not death. Certainly not a war that she'd be heading. "Because I've waited a long time for this. I'm going to explain to you what it means to be a... mate."
