Many tragedies harrow the quiet town of Valley Brook, Oklahoma in the first three weeks of July 2011. A woman pregnant with twins is flayed open on her doorstep; a prostitute is found hanging in the branches of a tree, disemboweled, with her organs littered among the foliage; and a seventeen-year-old girl is found hours after her murder in the home of her foster parents, the remains of her corpse a mess of ribboned flesh and blood.
Caught in the middle of it all is Homicide Detective Jesse Dean Moníz, the man police departments from two towns look to for sense in a godless situation. With each passing moment, Dean must hunt for answers through the remnants of the dead: broken mementos, mounds of letters and invoices; memories, immortalized within the pages of journals and diaries; and the fractured bits of those that remain, the families that pray to him like the Lord Above for answers.

The drawing she just found was a realistic depiction of myself smiling at the person who saw it. Unlike myself, who felt joy and inspiration from seeing father draw me this, mother was scared witless. Her legs became jelly, her body was paralyzed. All she could do was stare at the drawing, knowing that no one could have drawn this except an adult. And she knew I did not talk to any adults- or did I? Now she couldn't be too sure.
