It's the future, after the Kira case that horrified the world. Shinigami's are slowly gaining interest in the human world after Ryuuk played his game and had his fun. A lot of the case is still in the dark, but there is one boy who is obsessed with the case, wanting to find out the truth behind the news coverages. He grew up when this was happening, only about five, but he remembers it vividly, the horror of the people dying in their cells without an explanation- the bone chilling notes they left on their walls. He followed in L's footsteps to become like him, aspiring to protect others from what happened and to find the truth himself. He was interested in crime ever since and has become a genius, graduating high school with straight A's. He hid his records about his real name and goes by "Lori".
On the other hand, a Shinigami named Gurimu has dropped his Death Note in the human world to play his own game, wanting to monopolize the human race as his playtoys. He wants a war between the countries and bring the society under his wings. His selected playtoy is Asterio Rivolta for now- his first victim. Asterio is an Italian boy from a "good life" where he got all A's in his high school and graduated as an esteemed valedictorian of his class. Going to college seemed natural, and his passion for literature made his life decision easy. He became a high school lit teacher in New York, teaching the kids the best books. The Shinigami hid the Death Note between the books in the library that Asterio frequented to see the selections his students would pick... and of course, he had to know if it was real. After the Kira case... was it the same thing?
Now the game begins, and Lori is pulled to the mysterious deaths happening in the New York area. Prompted to go by his gut, he picks up his small amount of belongings due to his always changing, always moving life and goes to New York to investigate.
"You're different from what I expected," she said softly.
"How so?" he asked, glancing at her.
"I don't know," she replied, searching for the right words. "You just... have this way of making people feel like they matter. Even here, in this... nightmare."
He was quiet for a moment before responding. "You matter, Y/n. Don't forget that."

Y/n wakes up in the deadly Squid Game, surrounded by strangers and fighting to survive. What she doesn't know is that the mysterious Frontman is watching her every move through the cameras- and she's caught his attention.
