Although some may accept the LGBTQ community with open arms, not everyone is as open minded. Riley experiences this when she considers finally coming out to everyone at her school. She speaks to her best friend Farkle and reveals that she has a crush on Maya, a girl who joined a couple of months ago and quickly became a friend. She feels relief at getting it off her chest but she is unaware that Missy, the school bully, recorded the conversation and anonymously threatens to release the tape.

Riley is terrified of everyone finding out about her sexuality from someone else as well as Maya learning about her feelings and pleads with Missy to keep it a secret, although bullies are often not easily reasoned with.

Still, throughout a lot of pain and upset Riley keeps faith and believes that everything will be okay.
