Maybe it was the fact that her father died when she was only ten, but it seems like darkness is drawn to Lea. Her father died from unknown causes. Almost as if he was never there at all. I say this because the police never did discover his body. They assumed he was dead because that was the most logical explanation. Lea never came to terms with this.
