They say it's bad luck to have a woman on board, that she will bring the ship and crew many grievances along their journey, that it would anger the Gods of the sea. They were tossed overboard in hopes to appease the Gods and avoid their wrath that would be shown in storms and rough water- a sacrifice, almost.
Athanasia Dimitriou, fair-skinned maiden, rumored to have Greek blood, a runaway to London after the disappearance of her father, and having moved in with an adoptive family. She is keen on boarding the next ship to South America, for the last remaining members of her adoptive family have passed away. Impure, on the run, unmarried at the proper age, she is seen as a walking, breathing sin, and is ready to stowaway on a military traveling to Rio for reasons she cares too less to find out.
