Dan and Phil are both outsiders but, in two very different ways. Phil views things differently in a more optimistic way but, we all have our demons. Dan on the other hand is on the pessimistic side of this. Scared of being close to people. If he never lets people in how could they hurt him?
Both of them are quite similar except they are both hiding behind a mask of a different person to avoid the pain of the real world.
