Thalassa is the primeval sea Goddess who embodies the Sea itself.  In the Orphic Hymns She us equate with Tethys, Sea Goddess, Mother of the Sea Nymphs, and mother to the mortal hero Achilles.  Thalassa is also the Mother of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love.  When Kronos castrated Ouranus, his genitals fell into the ocean, and from this, Thalassa produced Aphrodite.
