His hands resting on his thighs clenched slightly. I could vaguely make it out in the darkness. "I never hated you, Jade."

"Sorry," I said. 

"You have nothing to apologize for. I know I'm very harsh at times but it's because there's so much at stake. I have to avenge my mom. And I have to protect you."

"My dad is a reasonable man. If something happened to me, he'd know you did your best."

"It's not because of him that I desire to protect you."

I was unsure what he was getting at. "Just some Antikan decency?"

"No. Much more than that."

Jade is a girl who thought she had everything lined up for her. She got into her dream college, she has a loving family and she strong dreams of who she was to become. 

What she doesn't know is that many years ago her uncle was going to murder her and her father. In exchange for their lives, her dad exposed Jade's secret: she is Multiworldcial. And he agreed for Mercury to take her on her 18th birthday in order to spare his family's life. 

But her dad has other plans for her involving a vengeful king named Arden who would love nothing than to start a war with Mercury. King Arden whisks Jade off to a new realm without her even having a chance to say goodbye to her old life. Now all she can do is wait as the pawn she is. 

Wait until Arden hopefully wins the war. Or wait until Mercury defeats him and takes her away.

That's not enough. Jade will do everything in her power to discover who she is, what it means to be the good gal, self-sacrifice, and how to live for people other than herself. The catch? She knows there's no way to do this, defeat Mercury, and come out alive.
