In an alternate universe in which Percy and his allies lost the Second Titan War, the gods have been reduced to mortal status after losing their spheres of influence to the Titans, who have devastated the Earth into an apocalyptic wasteland. All creatures who supported the gods, including satyrs, have been wiped out, and monsters roam the mortal world. All demigods have lost most of their inherited powers and even the hunters have lost their blessing. The Greek gods and their children are forced to seek the aid of the Kane siblings and remaining divisions of the House of Life in order to escape the Titans' wrath. Meanwhile, the Romans emerge angry, also having lost their most of their powers, blaming the Greeks for their failure to defend Mount Olympus. The Kanes try to convince the Egyptian gods to aid their Greek allies, but face opposition as some of them support the Titans. Percy and Annabeth are estranged after the deaths of Luke and Grover. Thalia grieves the lost of her friends and her immortality. And Nico, who lost the spirit of his sister, Bianca, to the Titan Iapetus, is determined to do anything to rescue her. Piper and Leo were never found and brought to camp, but meet each other and fight to survive in the abandoned cities. Jason is still Praetor of the Legion alongside Reyna, both resenting the Greeks for their failure. Frank is the merciless leader of the Fifth Cohort. Hazel never escaped from the Fields of Asphodel and is a slave of the Titans. Now, in a messed up world, Percy must rally his broken friends and family to find the last prophecy in order to learn what is to be done for their future. All the while avoiding roaming monsters and rogue Egyptian deities.
