Historical context:
By the time the Powers had caged Napoleon Bonaparte (Boney) his armies had ravaged all Europe. Only little England remains unscathed but for her soldiers. Her citizens were only touched emotionally. Soldiers return to crowds of hero-worshipers. The younger brother of the guillotined Louis 16th is propped up on the throne of France vacated by the Emperor Napoleon. But the ogre's old Grande Armee chafes on the bit of idleness and King Louis's aristocrats pant for revenge.

Story:
Peacetime is no more tranquil than wartime for some families.
The Darnleys are in debt. What is the solution? Their children must marry money. But while showing obedience, the siblings form their own ideas. Could the perfect partners fall for them? Could they fall for the perfect partners? Do perfect partners even exist?
Politics refuses to bury the past. Covered intrigues and grudges must surface. Secrets decades old collide and rock foundations. Reputation and wealth is everything. War might return.

Extract:
"You are three-and-twenty and have been nine months in the army. You are inclined to kick up larks, gamble, game, bet, and flirt with actresses. You want taming. In a few words, you want a wife. Our house is on a financial precipice. Any gust of wind could push us onto the rocks below. We want wealth. Look about you at this season's debutants. Neglect the belles backstage. Look around you with a keen and serious eye. Before you have only inspected society beauties with a mind for dalliance. Now inspect them for the qualities that might suit you in a wife. I cannot dictate them. You are familiar with your own tastes. Let her be decent. Let her be comely and, above all, let her be wealthy."
Completing this speech, Lord Darnley placed his fingertips together and awaited his son's response with a touch of his former anxiety.

COMPLETED. MATURE CONTENT. ______________________________________ Stubborn heiress to the Langford fortune has been arranged to be wed to the powerful heir of the Fiennes fortune. Two extremely rich and powerful houses set to be united as one in marriage in six months time. Josephine Langford is as stubborn as a bull and no one can make her change her mind about something she doesn't believe herself, so when her parents told her about being betrothed to another powerful family's heir, she throws a fit and demands that the arrangement be called off. Her parents' refusal to cancel the wedding forces her to take extreme measures. She knows this marriage isn't about love but all about fortifying their family's wealth. She detested this part of her charmed life. Somehow, she needs to find a way to put an end to this medieval arrangement between the Langfords and the Fiennes. She's an extremely private person and with the help of their family's wealth and connections, barely any picture of her and her identity has ever landed in the internet and publications. This gives her the idea to get the full dirt on this Hero Fiennes-Tiffin she is set to marry without him knowing that he is actually put under a microscope. As far as her research goes, the guy is nothing but a ruthless tycoon by day and a complete player by night but she isn't one to judge a person by what the internet or newspapers and magazines say-those can easily be fabricated-whereas if she gets to see firsthand who this guy really is and what possible proofs she can gather to convince her parents to cancel the engagement, it would be the best and really the only option she has. Two months. She has two months to get to know the guy before their wedding is announced to the whole world. Two months of pretension and deception. Two months and she'll finally be free of this madness.

In 1800s England, a well-meaning but selfish young woman will do anything to avoid matrimony to the county's finest suitors and to justly prove she doesn't need a husband to find her way in society. Even under the peril of her uncle losing his property and business to debt. In all but two months, she must prove to her family she's more than capable without a husband and can, in fact, exceed society's expectations of the female sex. But what woman can write what she hardly knows of the world, and its secrets? And most of all, how far is she willing to prove herself toward society and the Lord? At what cost for love? Maxmillian Knightley has returned from university in London, now facing the looming title of marquis. With that title comes responsibility to interact with those he despises most, and with which he must fight for his inheritance. But how far will he go in order to grow favor in the scrutiny of society and his stiff-neck father? He may be everything a woman of the ton looks for in a husband - titled, wealthy, and cheek bones that can draw in any woman - but he is in no mood to humor eligible women by participating in all things reformed. The question is: how far will he go to do everything against his own sensibility and judgment? For inheritance ... or for loyalty and love? The only common enlightenment between two entirely different sexes? A fondness for penmanship and our humorous Lord who writes the very novelty of life itself. And what happens if proving oneself leads to something quite worse? When it comes to love, making the right choices, these two are their own worst enemies. At a house party, a case of mistaken identity goes too far, compelling a lady's maid to play the part of a lady, risking her livelihood... and her heart! Emilia has always endeavored to be a humble and dutiful lady's maid, but the former seems beyond her and the latter... Well, there is only so much that can be asked! As a student of fashion, Emilia's goals weren't lofty. All she wished for was a charge who allowed her to make her mark in some small way, whether with hair, accessories, or a well-draped gown. Unfortunately, Prudence Crewe is the most unapologetically unfashionable bluestocking society has ever known. As if that weren't bad enough, now Pru expects her to take her place and her very identity at a house party! Emilia must navigate this mad charade while playing the part of Miss Prudence Crewe, putting off fortune hunters, thwarting a saboteur, trying not to enjoy living a life she only dreamed of, or even worse, falling in love. ********** Daniel Byrne, confident, rich and ruthless, may be a fatherless, Irish mongrel in the eyes of the Beau Monde, but he knows his worth and it can be measured in bank notes. For years he's thrown the kind of parties the younger men of The Ton couldn't resist. Now for The Ton to accept him or, at the very least, find him impossible to ignore, he only has only to make a good match. "Prudence Crewe" does not suit his needs at all. She's not high-born enough to raise his profile, poor enough to need his money, nor scandalous enough to make him interesting. Yet he can't dismiss her knowing glances, plain-spoken observations, and when circumstances throw them together, he doesn't wish to dismiss her at all... Book Two of The Crewe Legacy. Book One is The Lady Pursues. You don't necessarily need to read it in order to understand this one, but I recommend doing so as it will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the characters, meeting them there first.
