Emilia Mikealson is an original. She is a hybrid like her on again off again lover Klaus. But she is half vampire half witch. If one of them happens to break their curse they will both become true hybrids and for 500 years that's what they had been trying to do until they find the doppelgänger Katarina patrova.

Emily and the doppelgänger form a friendship and on the day of the ritual Emily feeds katarina her blood so she could become a vampire after the ritual.

But before the ritual could commence Katarina runs after Emily tells her what's happening and kills herself by hanging herself in Roses house. When klaus discovers why Katarina ran he blames Emily and she is forced to run or face desiccation.
