It's the 1990s, and 21-year-old Alan Kirkpatrick (aka Kippy) is starting art school and his new life away from the small town he grew up in where no-one knew he was gay.
Art school in Glasgow offers plenty of opportunities and his new best friend, Lillian, is determined to introduce him to them. There are parties, night clubs, chance encounters with good-looking bar men and the one older guy Kippy keeps running into who seems determined not to succumb to temptation.
There's also the tragic shadow of the past. Can Kippy see past his one, big secret love or will it define him for ever?
Meanwhile, his cousin Katrina is trying to carve a life out for herself in London. She's got the great career and plenty of friends, but her past continues to haunt her too - in the form of unrequited love, and a man who's always treated her like his annoying kid sister.
