Plötzlich wird es schwarz um Louisa. Als sie wieder zu sich kommt, befindet sie sich in einem verlassenen Tal in der Schattenwelt. Dort trifft sie auf den gleichaltrigen Jack, der genauso wie sie nicht weiß, wie er in diese Welt gelangt ist. Gemeinsam finden sie heraus, dass sich die Schattenwelt zwischen dem Leben und dem Tod befindet. Als ein alter Mann ihnen dann auch noch von Louisas verstorbenen Vater erzählt, der angeblich von dem finsteren Schattenkönig gefangen gehalten wird, treten die beiden den gefährlichen Weg zur dunklen Seite der Schattenwelt auf, um Louisas Vater zu retten. Dabei entdecken sie seltsame Wesen, und nicht alle sind ungefährlich...

I opened my eyes to see a dozen more staring right back, it was like standing in the hall of mirrors. I look down at myself and see dirt on my arm, I rub at it but it won't come off. I look at my other arm and see the same thing, just lighter, I rub that too. My eyes adjust to the sudden change of light and I can see that it wasn't dirt, they're tattoos. I look down at my shirt and I can see another one on my collarbone. I have no idea who I am, Beatrice? Tris. My name's Tris. but that's all I know. I have tattoo's, they link to my past life.
