After spending the last twenty three years in prison on manslaughter charges, James Walker, is released back into the real world; and while he spent that time stuck in the same state of mind, the worlds moved and fluxed accordingly to time. While he struggles to comprehend and a make his way in a new world to the one he left, his mother is the only one who can forgive him for his past transgressions, or is she?
His brother wants nothing to do with him and it appears that neither does the rest of the town. The ocean becomes his sanction again, as it was all those years before, yet when he comes across a former friend, they fall into a loose relationship. But he can't shape his life around the old one he had forever, and his identity must change to finally fit into the town that doesn't want him in their mix.

After the accident nothing seems the same for Matt, and despite finishing out his senior year, his motivation to move forward is gone. Desperately in search of something new, Matt turns to a martial arts school that his best friend had recommended. Set in the beautiful beach town of Oceanside this first person narrative focuses on key experiences that Matt goes through during his first year of training. The novel takes the reader on a journey following him as he struggles with the demands of karate training, as he deals with new relationships surrounding him, and most importantly as he learns to live with the memories of the accident that while becoming more clear, still haunt and hold him back. The variety of people he meets as part of his training, some more eccentric than others, push him to try and answer the call; including the "beautiful" brown belt Cammie, who helps him try and fully face the memories of the accident. The idea is to showcase the world of hard core martial arts and integrate it into the challenges of overcoming serious trauma. It highlights how the power of being a part of a community in the fascinating world of martial arts can be surprising, challenging, yet transformative. With the advent of a series like "Cobra Kai" I believe there is interest in coming of age narratives that are set within the sometimes bizarre and mysterious world of martial arts. I personally love John Green's work and hopefully there is at least a taste of what he offers in terms of intensity and depth of character. The following "tags" I think would fit well in trying to describe the narrative : coming of age, drama, tragedy, karate, kata, fighting, romance, and recovery.Terminé

Ashley's life is turned upside down when her mother is killed in a car accident. Leaving her hometown in Canada, she is forced to move back to Australia with her father whom she hasn't seen since her parents split when she was five. As much as she wants to leave and return to Canada, Ashley decides to stay when she meets Ryan who is protecting a Bottlenose dolphin abandoned by its mother. Ryan and Ashley, as well as his family, does everything they can do to protect Cleo and other dolphins from Japanese whalers who are due to past by the bay in any day now. But it isn't easy to protect them when a girl from their school has a father who is a whaler. And when she tells her father about Cleo, Ashley, Ryan and his sister finds themselves out at sea to stop the whalers.Terminé

And speaking of waves, what is it that pulls Karmichael so strongly into the watery arms of the ocean? And who is this finned female creature that visits our (anti) hero during his nocturnal dreamscape? Is she real? What is she trying to express to Karmichael? Into all this falls Jahe Bennet, a native of the Lowcountry who has recently relocated back to Charleston after having survived a failed marriage. Her family is well to do and this enables Jahe to live above a boutique in the historic district on Broad Street. Her nightlife circle eventually flows into the pull of Karmichael and the two damaged souls find some sliver of recognition in each other. They cross paths several times, and after a meaningful first impression begin dating. Kar may not be a good guy, and he may not be honest, but he is always true. He opens to Jahe little by little, until, unfortunately, his other dangerous interests interrupt his best intentions.Terminé
