Every hint of Earth or 'the surface' cast dark cold shadows over Kale's naturally pessimistic life, reminding him of his parents, his home, everything he's lost. There's nothing for him here. Or is there? They run across a potentially habitable planet one cycle, but is there anything else down there? Aliens? Hostile creatures? Desert, or tundra? Hope?
