The old by-road went rambling down into a dell of deep green shadow. It was a reprobate of a road,-a vagrant of the land,-having long ago wandered out of straight and even courses and taken to meandering aimlessly into many ruts and furrows under arching trees, which in wet weather poured their weight of dripping rain upon it and made it little more than a mud pool. Between straggling bushes of elder and hazel, blackberry and thorn, it made its solitary shambling way, so sunken into itself with long disuse that neither to the right nor to the left of it could anything be seen of the surrounding country. Hidden behind the intervening foliage on either hand were rich pastures and ploughed fields, but with these the old road had nothing in common. There were many things better suited to its nature, such as the melodious notes of the birds which made their homes year after year amid its bordering thickets, or the gathering together in springtime of thousands of primroses, whose pale, small, elfin faces peeped out from every mossy corner,-or the scent of secret violets in the grass, filling the air with the delicate sweetness of a breathing made warm by the April sun.

I found this in project Gutenberg and felt that l should share it with those who have never read it before. it's a beautiful book and l wish you would all find time to read it. It's not mine just felt the need for someone else to enjoy the story like l did. Here is the synopsis:

Regency era, alternative story about Charlotte Heywood and Sidney Parker. Sidney's mother is pushing him to marry and marry well to save the family from ruin. His pursuit is Mrs. Campion, a wealthy widow with a horrible personality. On the verge of asking her to marry him, he goes on a hunting trip to clear his head. What happens on this hunting trip changes his path in life forever. Sidney POV When I first had the idea for this story, I pictured a bear attacking Sidney. But doing research I found that bears are not common wild animals in England. I'm American and live in a state where bears are common. In doing research, I found that in the regency era there were wild cats that were referred to as phantom cats, panthers, jaguars, or leopards. Although, some accounts claim there is no such thing and stories were exaggerated. Anyway, for story purposes, this phantom cat exists. I know it may not sound realistic, but as I said before, there were stories about these wild cats in some of my research. I also came across stories of the aristocratic and higher class bringing these exotic animals to England to show off and look grander to others. It reminded me of someone purchasing a dog as a puppy, thinking it'll be great. Then months later realizing these cute puppies grow up and destroy your home and chew everything up. I pictured a rich woman insisting she have one of these pure black cats on one of her many voyages to far off lands and her rich husband buying her the exotic animal. Then as this cat grew and suddenly the realization that it's a wild animal and could potentially kill someone, these high society people may just decide to let the animal go in the woods to fend for himself. Now this cat is alone in a land he doesn't belong and trying to survive, perhaps resenting man for the cruel way he was treated. Now I feel sorry for the panther. Anyway, that's the backstory on the panther and why it may be in a place it's not supposed to be.

I didn't mean for any of it to happen that way. Not the road, not the nights, not him. At first, it was just somewhere to go when the apartment got too small and Beckham's voice got too loud. A stretch of gravel where the air didn't feel so heavy. Somewhere I could sit in my car, music low, windows down, and remember what it felt like to breathe. That road didn't promise anything-just peace. But that was enough for me. The first time I drove out there after everything with Beckham started falling apart, the sky was this bruised kind of purple, the kind that comes right before the dark settles. The smell of bonfire smoke carried through the trees, and you could already hear the bass from somebody's truck long before you saw the lights. That's what I remember most about those nights-the sound. The laughter. The way it all wrapped around you like the world outside didn't exist. Taylor was always the first face I'd see, blunt in hand, that same easy grin like nothing bad ever lasted long out here. And then there was Colin-always in the mix, never looking for attention, but somehow he had all of it anyway. I didn't think much of him at first. Just another familiar face in the crowd. But the thing about the dirt road is that it keeps you long enough for things to shift. The longer I stayed, the more I started to notice the way he looked at me when he thought I wasn't watching, or how the sound of his laugh stuck in my head even after I drove away. Looking back now, maybe it started right there-somewhere between the smoke, the music, and the way he said my name like it was something worth softening for. But that night, I wasn't looking for meaning. I was just trying to forget. And the dirt road? It never lets you forget. It just teaches you to pretend you're not remembering.

He gave me a feline smile as he stalked toward me. I backed away until my heels hit the stall wall and he took advantage of my surprise by stepping in to me, his body a mere whisper from mine. "That's good, Evelyn," he murmured and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. My heart was pounding and I knew my face was betraying everything I was feeling. Damn him. I didn't want to feel this excited clench in my stomach. I didn't want to feel this longing for him. "What are you doing?" My voice was shakier than I would've hoped and far too breathy. "Something I've wanted to do for a very long time." *************************************************** Two hundred years after a powerful sorceress eliminated all modern technology and most of Earth's population, the people left behind live happily with no electricity, no motorized machinery - no advanced technology of any kind. However, many of them now possess magical gifts that were once considered myth. Evelyn Kentala, a talented horse trainer, is an empath and uses her gift to understand animals. Her abilities don't allow her to know the emotions of people - or so she thinks. When Broderick Ryan, the next leader of his and Evelyn's province, returns home after being gone for five years, Evelyn discovers she's much more than an empathic horse trainer. Frightening and rare abilities begin to manifest and she's left reeling when she discovers why. Evelyn and Broderick find themselves drawn to each other as they discover the secrets of her unknown past and fight to keep themselves, and their province, safe from those who wish them harm.

I've been working on this story since 2023 in my original manuscript and hope to one day publish the final, extended version. I could see him grinning out of the corner of my eye. He was enjoying this far too much. "Just do not ever scare me like that again, Jasper," I fussed. He winced as I moved the cloth across his ribs. "Or what?" he toyed. I stopped and glared at him, stammering, trying to think of something clever. "I-I'll... I don't know, but I'll think of something." Before I knew it, Jasper had his arm around my waist and pulled me into the tub with a splash. "Jasper," I gasped. In a world where humans and orcs have been at war for centuries, 22-year-old Lady Brenna of Blackwater Hold is sent to the Northern Orruk Horde - an unheard-of act. [A/N]: Hey guys! Before I post this story, I was going to give a little insight. A very good friend of mine and I decided to write this book, and what better way to recieve constructive critcism than to share with everyone here on wattpad? I'm proud to say that we're nearly finished with it, around three to five more chapters need to be written. However, I will gladly post two chapters a week. Depending on the length, I could possibly split each chapter in two. Enjoy! -Skye & Jasmine My attempts to sleep failed miserably as realization hit me. Tonight was my last night unattached to someone. I swung my legs to one side of the bed. My bare feet brushed the cold floor and sent shivers up my spine. Scotland is much warmer this time of year. I took a few steps toward the window, but before I got too far I heard chatter just outside my door. "She’ll never be happy with him." The first voice, a female, was barely audible. "She could be. She’s just upset about Benjamin." A second voice, a man, replied to the woman. "She’ll never love Derick." A hint of anger played beneath the surface of the woman’s voice. I lay back down after that, so much for Emma accepting our marriage. Unhappiness coursed through my body and I became furious. I’d never love Emma either; with that I went to sleep. I dreamt of my mother singing in the castle, her voice was loud and demanding. Her words flowed so freely from her mouth and danced playfully down the halls. She was in the throne room singing to my father just as she always did. Her song was about the way she learned to love my father. Most marriages in Scotland are arranged, and due to our beliefs they have to work out. My mother had always been so madly in love with my father, but he was hesitant because he had to leave the woman he loved so dearly. So he let her go…
