In Luke Barracks' society, everyone has a place. Your place in society is determined by a test given to all eighteen year olds. The test separates you into one of the three coteries- Gratia (the kind-hearted), Callidus (the clever), and Audax (the audacious, or brave). On the summer solstice of each year (June 20 or 21), all eighteen year olds must move into the coterie that their test deigns them the most aptitude for. There they will devote the rest of their lives to their coterie's purpose. Those that are not applicable to any of the three coteries are sent to an unadvertised coterie- Alteratorum (the altered). Luke's life is drastically changed when he is deemed an Alteratorum. He is ripped from his home life and thrust into the unknown where he meets others like him. With the help of his new friends, he discovers that the society that seems perfect at first glance, is threatening to collapse. The question is, would it be better if it did? Join Luke, Charlie, Evan, and Annabelle as they attempt to find out the truth about their society's origin and why it was created.

Disclaimer: I wrote this novel before the movie Lucy came out it is in no way related but the premise of the brain and the powers eerily similar It is the year 2173. Human beings have evolved to use more than 10% of their brain, and as an effect, possess supernatural powers. Luna and Lara Valkyrie grew up in a foster home in the town of Westhaven, California. Both 18 and having been born on the same day, they were raised as twins, Luna adopting Lara's surname because of her own being unknown. Westhaven is a lovely town, the perfect place to live the american dream in. There is only one problem. Not only there, but in almost every place in the world, human beings are branded with a number, that being the amount of supernatural abilities they possess. By the time each child reaches the age of 18, that number becomes permanent, and everyone with a ranking above 5 is taken away. From that moment on, they belong to the government, and must train in government facilities that are a lot like prisons or army bases. Their eyes are changed by machines, and they are identified for the bright aura-like color that surrounds their pupils and contrasts against their natural eye color, "the sunflower effect". Michael meets Luke, a teenager venturing out in the gay nightlife for the first time. Michael takes Luke home with him for the night, and gradually Luke begins to find out more about gay life through a close circle of friends. ~~~ A blatant take on the Queer As Folk TV series that ran in the UK 1999-2000 & was remade in the USA 2000-2005. These series dealt with gay rights and social issues featuring storylines concerning homophobia, HIV & AIDS, Proposition 14 (USA version), violence/gay bashing, coming out, drug use, gay marriage & parental rights amongst others. The original UK series was set in Manchester, the US version in Pittsburg, I have set this version in Sydney at the same time (Early 90's) and have kept the original music that was first used in the UK version and re-used in the US version. I've renamed the characters (obviously) and also place names etc to suit the change in city. I've also added in some Australian-ness to suit the location. If you haven't seen the TV series, the UK version was ground breaking for it's time, nothing like it had been seen before and it sent controversial waves rippling which Showtime picked up on. They re-made it for a US audience, using nearly the exact same script before carrying it on and expanding it into 5 series. I highly recommend you watch if you can!
