Ember has broken the rules before. She has swam to the human shores and seen humans. Unfortunately, it's not all the glamor that fairytales boast. She returns to the sea, battered and bloody, but her battle is over. Until she is chosen to go back to the humans. She is elected to marry a prince in need of a wife and strengthen bonds with the humans again, but the world she sees is worse than the one she fled from.

➖After her mother's death, seventeen year old Karis tries to drown herself and is mysteriously saved by a boy who assumed she was unconscious. But some things he says don't add up, and he realizes the consequences of his actions, since saving drowning humans is against the law.
