Dawn Summers has had a condition called selective mutism since she was little. She doesn't talk to anyone outside her family, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have words flying around her head when people reach out to her. She just can't bridge the gap between her mind and her mouth. She's used to her life of almost silence, she doesn't like it, but it's what she's always known. She doesn't expect anything to change.
Then Zander, (or more accurately, Zander Samson Read) came along. In contrast to Dawn's silence, Zander seemingly never stopped talking. He was bright, and sunny, and wouldn't give up on getting her to talk. More than that, he's hiding something behind his happy persona, and understands her fear much better than she could have ever imagined.
But Dawn is used to being the silent girl, she's not sure if she really wants to change that. Or if she even can.
