He never really wanted a mate because he doesn't want to be that attached to someone. He has heard that if your mate dies after the mate bond has started then you will be depressed and lonely or you could potentially kill yourself to be with them depending on how strong the mate bond is . He never wanted to be condemned to that kind of life.
