Fausta is a peasant living in the poor area of the town of Sherfield. She is hunting with her father Ademar and brother, when she strays too far into the forest near Mount Ashborne while chasing a strange creature. She is knocked out by an unknown force out in the woods, and when she wakes up, saved by her father. A strange brand mark is left on her. Suddenly, the weather patterns are irregular and undiscovered creatures are spotted in the sky. Will Fausta find out what they are?

He quickly dismounted and swiftly lead his horse over to Celine's, taking its reins and tying both horses to a tree before going after her. "Celine! Wait!" he called after her as he realized that he could hear a very low humming noise coming from within the woods. "Maybe she's following the noise," he thought as he began to follow it to find where it was coming from and hopefully locate Celine. He pushed through the underbrush as the sound became louder and then he saw Celine standing in front of a whirling, shimmering vortex which was floating about four feet above the forest floor.
