You don't need to tell Kyra Michaels that she's not normal. Really. It's been pretty obvious to her since...oh, her BIRTH. She may not claim to be an "other," but with her second sight into the Fae world, she was well aware that she wasn't your typical human either. Born with a powerful magic flowing in her veins and shadow guardians that have been protecting her before she knew how, all Kyra was sure about was that she had to have a greater purpose in this world. What was that purpose? Hell if she knew... For the most part, it would seem like trouble was her purpose, of the self-inflicted kind. Werewolves, trolls, elves, and now harpies. Kyra has managed to find her way onto her share of hit-lists. She hadn't meant to upset the harpies. Honestly, what they considered a threat was merely an act of good intentions on her part. Her only choice was to prove herself to the harpies, or else be gutted and left to rot on the streets. But when a mysterious half-blooded Fae turns up in her life, a Fairie fugitive wanting nothing more than to be allowed to live, suddenly being julienned by a Harpy doesn't sound so bad.

For as long as she can remember, Kyra Faulkner has longed for a life of adventure in the Shield Guild. She wants to travel to the unknown, meet people from all walks of life, and live to protect the world she knows, a world full of what humans would call monsters. As if her parents' disapproval of her desired lifestyle is not annoying enough, her indecisive twin brother piggybacks onto her dream. Things only get worse when Kenai is awarded her dream job as a warrior and Kyra is forced to stay at home and hit the books, the last thing she wants to do. When she finally cannot take it anymore, she devises a plan, but it's risky. Whether she succeeds or not, she could die. Is a chance at happiness worth the betrayal of her dearly, beloved brother and leaving home? Or is there something better out there? Things only get more complicated when she meets Robin, a monster, like Kyra. But unlike her, Robin used to be human and does not sympathize with Kyra's kind. Can she change Robin? Will she show him that there is more to the vampire world than the human myths? Or will he show her there is more to life than the Shield Guild?
