Publicado pela primeira vez na Inglaterra em 1938, este romance de Ayn Rand se passa num futuro sombrio em que o governo aboliu a individualidade e tudo se realiza de forma coletiva e anônima, nada se faz sem a permissão de conselhos todo-poderosos. Enquanto faz um trabalho rotineiro de manutenção, um rapaz descobre um túnel onde encontra artefatos de um mundo antigo, perdido e proibido. Ele secretamente estuda, experimenta e, aos poucos, começa a entender o que havia encontrado. O problema é que se alguém descobrisse o que ele estava fazendo, poderia ser punido com anos de detenção. Por outro lado, continuar vivendo naquela coletividade já não fazia mais sentido, era insuportável. Portanto, prepare-se porque o clima é tenso! --- Nesta ficção, Ayn Rand provoca o leitor fazendo emergir nele os princípios de sua filosofia: a Vida, a Racionalidade, o Individualismo, a Ética, a Laboriosidade, o Orgulho. Ayn Rand faleceu em 1982. A obra original em inglês (Anthem) já é domínio público e pode ser lida em diversos sites da Internet.
