This second story line introduces Edward Nigma aka the Riddler, who is determined to be the most outlandish and cleverest of Gotham City's criminals. To do this, he plots elaborate trails of clues and riddles around his crimes. Batman has proven to be a worthy opponent, capable of unraveling the Riddler's most intricate plans, but Nigma is dedicated to creating a widespread and more personal mystery that will confound Batman's vulnerability and make him bow under Riddler's superior intellect. Returning key characters include Alfred Pennyworth, Commissioner James Gordon, Lucius Fox, and Vicki Vale, as well as Dick Grayson and the mysterious Selina Kyle.
