During my mother's life, colored people were for one purpose only; labor. Having any other relationship with them was forbidden. My mother was the daughter of a respected wealthy plantation owner, Thomas Edward Lloyd. Thomas married Sarah Ann, and she gave him a daughter; Charlotte Ann Lloyd, and latter a son Henry Edward Lloyd. Thomas and Sarah raised their family on a plantation in South Carolina, growing sugar cane.
My mothers love story did not turn out like the fairy tales every little girl grows up imagining. She fell in love with a man she could never be with, if she were to be with him; he would have been killed and she would have been disowned. My mother, Charlotte loved the man her father hated, but he was not just the man her father hated, he was a slave on her father's plantation.
Not all love stories end in a happy ever after, some end in tragic ending; like my beautiful mothers and Sam's story.
