all that space. the trees, reaching out to touch the sky. time seemed to slow down out here, fall into placid rhythms as the creek had beside her. it was dark but she could almost make out the rugged face in the trees. he was there in her mind, so clear, and she reached out to touch him, but it disappeared as soon as she started to believe it with her own eyes. the dreams of him started that night.

"Please wake up." I said as I held his hand. I looked for any sign of response; a movement beneath an eyelid, a twitch of a finger. Nothing. He was just... blank. I felt the tears come. I played with his hand in mine; traced invisible messages in his palm with my finger, hoping just maybe he'd magically be able to get them. Tears started falling down my cheeks. I held his hand gently against my lips. Tears dropped on his fingers until they were as wet as my eyes. I rested my head on his limp hand. "I told you I needed you to stay."
