A short historical-fiction narrative based off the painting Harvest of Battle (Nevinson, 1919).
Amidst the falling shrapnel of shells and cries as bullets pierce men through the heart, a young Alistair Ehlhardt struggles to survive the viciousness of humanity. Enlisted at the age of 18, Alistair is a lowly soldier with a rank to match. Among his unit, a familiar face is what brings the need to survive to well up inside his beaten body. With his friend, Jack Lancaster, at his back, Alistair begins to see a future in which they may just be alive. But will they make it to the end? Or will this war be their demise? Only right timing and how well they can dodge a bullet, will tell.

Smoking and alcohol feature fairly heavily - SMOKING is not good for your health, but if you do/are going to smoke, please do so responsibly and safely - ALCOHOL is fine as long as it is consumed responsibly, please don't binge drink as it will seriously damage your body. To even have a chance, Ava has to prove that just because she's a woman, doesn't mean she isn't capable of fighting to survive like the rest of them. Ava finds herself stuck in 1944, with "strange" technology called a cell phone, no way of charging it, and no way of getting home. In the midst of a gruesome and horrifying war, she finds herself questioning more than just sanity of the time period, but even her own. Henry enlists in the military against his parents' wishes and throws himself into the life of a British soldier in Flanders. But it is far from what he expects: Henry's fantasies of righteous battle fade into the grim reality of gruesome death and shell-shock. He and his fellow soldier Jacob must help each other survive the cruel trenches, but it is no longer certain that either of them will return to England alive. Told in journal entries and letters from Henry's sister Elizabeth, this reveals the realities and horrors of World War I, on the battlefield and in the homefront. I wrote this for a history project while studying WWI and got way too involved in it, so here you are. WARNINGS: gun/bomb/gas-related violence, war descriptions, graphic death, suicide attempt.
