When Mallory Hayashi survives a suicide attempt after becoming severely depressed from an accident that occurred a year ago that ended with her mother dying from, she soon finds out she never actually survived.

Only ending up feeling worse for herself and trying to hide it from her widowed father, they move a few months later to a small town in New York known for it's lush forests that border the town that are filled with mysteries and conspiracy theories. 

There, she meets Emory who both terrifies and interests her and Adelaide, whose shy demeanor that hides more to her than what meets the eye. But as she starts unearthing a new world she never knew existed and growing closer to the residents of the town, she soon finds out about what exactly is lurking in the forests, and who truly is a monster.
