Mara is a homunculus. Where she is from, though, it is not all that uncommon. Homunculi are the indentured servants of the Magi, a select few humans who protect everyone from the world outside the Barrier they erected together. Mara has been promised by her Magi, Draven, to marry a man she does not know. When a stranger appears and disrupts the festivities days before the wedding, Mara takes matters into her own hands and wrestles a deal to escape the carefully laid fate the Magi had planned for her.

For centuries, the small village of Asra has been haunted by a beast of the forest. The beast would come every night and ravish the village. Fifteen years ago, villagers came up with this idea to offer the beast yearly sacrifices of 18 year old virgins. Raven is the village orphan. She is an outcast in the village. She never knew her parents. Her mother was murdered by the villagers and her father is an unknown man. After years of abuse from the villagers she ran away. She went into the deepest part of the forest. There she met the beast. Raven wasn't scared of him. Instead she was intrigued. The beast thought the child was insane. She came every day to see him, chattering about nothing important. Over time he started to warm up to her. Through the years they developed a sort of friendship. But what will the two do when on her eighteenth birthday, the village priest decides that Raven would be the sacrifice for that year? Will the beast kill his friend like he did the others? Or will he free her? ~~~~~~
