To Daniel Howell, the concept of identity is whatever you make it to be. When Dan's mother was mysteriously murdered when he was 18, it was the worst thing he ever had to deal with. The case being unsolved added to what felt like never ending stress. His anxiety ridden, depressed personality became too much to handle to the point he found he's had enough. What if he could be whoever he wanted to be to push his past away. Creating different identities for himself to be to other people made him feel in charge of his life. By the time he was 25 he had a total of five different identities that different people in his life knew him as. However, new evidence in his mothers murder case are found causing him to go back to the one identity he discarded completely, his true self, Dan. Dan hated his true self the most, but to Phil Lester, the detective on his mothers case, Dan's true self was the most intriguing person he's ever met.
